Where to See Manatees in Florida
Top Spots for Gentle Encounters
Florida’s warm waters are a natural haven for one of its most beloved marine mammals-the manatee. These gentle giants, often called "sea cows," migrate to Florida’s springs and coastal areas, especially during cooler months (November through March), when they seek out warm waters. Here are the best places in Florida to see manatees in their natural habitat.
Blue Spring State Park (Orange City)
This is one of the most popular manatee viewing spots in Florida and it is the spring I went to the most growing up in Volusia County. During winter, hundreds of manatees gather in the clear, warm waters of the spring run. A boardwalk along the spring offers amazing, up-close views.
Crystal River & Three Sisters Springs
Crystal River is often called the "Manatee Capital of the World." It’s one of the few places where you can swim with manatees (with a guided tour). Three Sisters Springs has crystal-clear water and protected areas perfect for watching manatees from shore or kayak.
Manatee Lagoon (West Palm Beach)
This free educational center overlooks warm water outflows from a power plant that attract manatees in winter. It’s family-friendly with exhibits, viewing platforms, and great photo ops.
TECO Manatee Viewing Center (Apollo Beach)
Another power plant site, this location offers boardwalks, a tower, and a visitor center. Manatees gather here when Tampa Bay’s waters get cold.
Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park
This park features both wild and rehabilitated manatees. An underwater observatory provides unique below-the-surface views.
Whether you're kayaking beside them or watching from a boardwalk, encountering a manatee is a magical Florida experience. Just remember—look, don’t touch. Manatees are protected by law, and keeping a respectful distance ensures their safety and yours.
